OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced that he had a phone conversation with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella about his current partnership. The statement came during a podcast broadcast where Altman was a guest.
OpenAI and Microsoft collaboration may enter a new phase
There have been reports in the press for a while that relations between the two companies have been strained. This conversation shows that the negotiations between the parties are ongoing and that there has not yet been a break.
At the beginning of June, it was revealed that Microsoft and OpenAI were renegotiating the terms of the current investment agreement and that there was a disagreement about the future share ratio. Altman said that there was tension in the partnership from time to time, but that the relations were generally productive for both parties.
He also stated in his statement that he had had talks with US President Donald Trump about artificial intelligence and that these talks were productive. He stated that Trump understood the economic and geopolitical importance of artificial intelligence.
The tense process is based on the mega artificial intelligence infrastructure project called “Stargate” that Trump announced in January. This project, funded by SoftBank, OpenAI and Oracle, has an investment target of $500 billion.
Microsoft’s exclusion from this project and OpenAI’s partnership with some of its biggest competitors are shown as one of the breaking points in the current relationship.
The current agreement between Microsoft and OpenAI includes a two-way 20 percent revenue sharing. At the same time, Microsoft has the right to access OpenAI technologies until 2030. In ongoing negotiations, reducing this revenue rate and redefining Microsoft’s shareholding in OpenAI’s for-profit structure are on the table.
